Is a term used by recreational and or spiritual drug users to refer to someone who remains sober to ensure the safety of the drug user.[71] I have personally only had a designated trip sitter(s) during my first trip. I was with a group of friends and 3 of us took mushrooms while 3 did not. Although, the 3 who did not not were in no means sober, they were people who I felt comfortable with and who made sure we were safe. I have personally been a trip sitter and do recommend it if possible (someone else tripping does not count)

A sitter is different than a guide since a sitter merely stands by to discourage bad trips or handle emergencies, but does not take on an active role.[71]

Who Should Sit?

  • I would recommend someone you TRUST, whether it's a close friend/relative/significant other, preferably someone you love. Make sure you feel comfortable around this person.
  • Some people like to ask a more experienced user familiar with the drug to trip sit, however the first point still is most important
  • Although the ideal sitter would be someone both personally experienced with the substance and one trained to deal with any crisis that may happen, this is rarely the case. The most important aspects are:
    • Someone you trust
    • Willingness to help
    • Responsibility to stay sober and be fully present

A**bility to be relaxed, accepting, and not interfere with the experience beyond what the user wants/needs

    • Willing to research the substance and effects

Common Duties:

A responsible trip sitter will assist the drug user before, during, and after the experience.[71] It is their responsibility to assist the user with things such as: drinking enough water, moving around, and generally doing whatever they need to be comfortable.[71]

Before use:

  • It is recommended that the trip sitter research the substance thoroughly, however I think as long as the sitter has a general understanding of the substance then that should suffice. (The person ingesting the substance should still do research).
  • Have a talk with the drug user about expectations
    • What happens if there's an emergency?
    • What guidance, if any, is wanted?

During use:

  • A sitter should remain present throughout the whole experience[71]

The sitter can assist with facing fears if the experience turns negative or scary[71]

  • It is very important for the sitter to understand what situations they can handle by themselves and when they should seek medical/professional care[71]

After the trip:

  • A sitter can help the user integrate or understand the experience[71]
  • Also continue to reassure/help as needed
